Located on the northeastern shore of Staten Island, New York, Fort Wadsworth is a historic military installation with a rich and diverse history dating back to the 1600s. Originally built by the Dutch in the 17th century as a coastal defense fort, it was later expanded and fortified by the British during their occupation of New York City in the 18th century. It was eventually taken over by the United States military and played a significant role in protecting the entrance to New York Harbor.

During the American Revolution, Fort Wadsworth was used as a strategic defensive position by the British, and then later by the Continental Army. In the 19th century, it was further fortified and expanded to defend against potential attacks from the sea, and it served as an important military installation during the Civil War, World War I, and World War II.

One of the most famous features of Fort Wadsworth is Battery Weed, a large coastal defense fortification that was built in the mid-1800s. It was named after Brigadier General Stephen H. Weed, who fought and died during the Battle of Gettysburg in the Civil War. Battery Weed has been well-preserved and is now open to visitors as part of the Gateway National Recreation Area, allowing people to explore its tunnels, barracks, and gun emplacements.

In addition to Battery Weed, Fort Wadsworth also includes several other notable structures such as Battery Duane, Battery Barbour, and the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge, which passes through the fort’s grounds. The fort is also home to the Staten Island Range Lighthouse, which has been in operation since the mid-1800s and is a popular landmark for both locals and tourists.

Today, Fort Wadsworth is part of the Gateway National Recreation Area and is open to the public for tours, hiking, picnicking, and other recreational activities. The site is also used for special events, historical reenactments, and educational programs, making it a valuable resource for preserving and sharing the history of the area.
